Cultural note: Obrona Częstochowy Obrona Częstochowy is one of Poland's patriotic myths. The siege of the monastery of Jasna Góra in Częstochowa took place in the 17th century during the Polish-Swedish war. Over time this event became steeped in legend and became a symbol of the "nation's victorious spirit" and the "defence of the faith", with the phrase Obrona Częstochowy becoming part of everyday language.
